Action
Ideas People throughout the U.S. are developing determined, creative responses to the ever-expanding "war on terrorism." People are mobilizing for national demonstrations on April 20 in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco. Worldwide protests against the Israeli siege of Palestine are ongoing. Peaceful Tomorrows is an organization of people who lost family members to the Sept. 11 attacks. They are lobbying Congress for an Afghan victims fund to support those who suffered losses in the U.S. airstrikes. To join this effort, contact www.peacefultomorrows.org. On April 18, Racial Justice 911, a national coalition of racial justice organizations opposed to the U.S. war program, and Incite!, a national organization of women of color against violence, will plaster thousands of anti-war posters on the walls of U.S. cities. Contact protest@caaav.org. In Kaunakakai, on the Hawaiian island of Molokai, people gather every Thursday morning for a "peace painting action." In Sacramento, California, a dental hygienist turns a U.S. flag she received from the Crest toothpaste company into a piece of street theater. She washes it in a tub full of suds and hangs it out to dry, while singing "I'm gonna wash that oil right out of my flag." At the end of March, peace advocates in North Carolina undertook a 100-mile walk across their state for peace and immigrant rights. Daily or weekly vigils take place in over 70 towns and cities across the country, including Missoula, Montana; Davenport, Iowa; Oxford, Mississippi; Bangor, Maine and Visalia, California. The National Lawyers Guild wants everyone to know that citizens, non-citizens and juveniles all have the right not to talk to any government agent, police, FBI or INS agent. The Guild will provide attorneys for people contacted by authorities as a result of 9-11. Their Know Your Rights pamphlet, in multiple languages, is at www.nlg.org. The War Resisters League offers a geographic listing of events at www.warresisters.org/demos.htm#actions. |
