News article:
September 12, 2001... "I live in Hawaii on the island of Oahu, and
I read in the Honolulu Advertiser an article about the filming of
Windtalkers," writes a local resident. "The budget is set
around $100 million. At Kualoa Ranch they were doing on-site battlefield
rehearsals. There were a hundred or more extras 'dressed as American
soldiers in period detail' in an open field. John Woo pointed out white
markings all over the valley where explosions would simulate the battle
fire. He also said that there were 200 of them for one shot. Woo went on
to say that although it has Nicolas Cage in it and a lot of explosives,
the movie will focus on individuals...'It's all about friendship. And the
Navajo. We want to tell their story...I will try to make it very
realistic, very real and very touching.'"
