This is my recently completed UK Manx II. I started work in
January shortly after Selling my Red Renegade (see Dec 01
BOTM). I live in the Lake District but the work was largely
done in N. Wales at John Gurney's workshop. We started from
scratch with an acid dipped chassis, and have been as thorough
as possible putting it together - using mostly standard parts
for ease of maintenance and to keep costs sensible. That said,
it features IRS rear suspension, sway away adjusters in the
the front beam, front disc brakes from the new Beetle and
a new Manx shell. A host of very subtle but standard looking
body modifications were done also. The engine is a 1776cc
type 1 with 36mm Del orto carbs, the wheels - Cragar Keystones.
The Roll bar dimensions were pondered over much, and the decision
to upholster it makes a huge difference to the overall look.
The colour is a 1998 Peugeot Sienna brown metallic. The clocks
are VDO and I retained my clip / off steering wheel from my
Red Renegade after the Russian trip last year. Plain fitted
rubber mats adorn the footwells, plain black vinyl interior
and fitted hood excellently done by Aldridge trimming. Seats
were 'liberated' from my father's old renegade that hasn't
run for years. He didnt realise I'd taken them and had them
re-upholstered, and on presentation of the finished manx he
said - 'those seats are nice, a bit like my old ones'
