I have recently acquired what I consider to be a family heirloom and certainly a classic '68 Meyers Tow'd from my uncle in California. Why a family heirloom? In the late 60's and early 70's, when I was a young child in Santa Maria, California, my father and uncle were dune enthusiasts back when all the dunes were open along the central California coast. I have many fond memories of duning with my family at Oso Flaco Lake and Pismo Beach. My uncle had bought the Tow'd kit in 1968 and installed a 1600 from a 68 squareback that he purchased after a group of squareback's were damaged in shipment to the states. He maintained this classic over the years and had kept it stored in his radiator shop while occassionally enjoying it at Pismo and many trips to Baja California. Fast forward 30 some years, I found myself involved in a group of dune enthusiasts in my new home town of Scottsdale, Arizona. Our preferred recreational area these days is Buttercup Valley west of Yuma. When my uncle mentioned to me that he was going to be selling his Tow'd earlier this year, I offered to buy it. Much to my delight, he decided to give it to me as a gift. I now enjoy this classic and someday I hope to leave it to my sons.
