Story of The Isler-Kyle House
(Research by Weldon Williford in Wayne County Archives & Google)

The property now known as 203 N. Slocumb Street has been added onto and divided (the lot, not the house) since the property was originally purchased in Nov. 1915. The lot, purchased by James and Barbara Isler Kyle from W. A. J. Peacock, was bought for the sum of $2,365.00(deed on file). The property was originally 86' across the front (Slocumb Street) and as deep as 330 (Mulberry Street). Barbara Isler Kyle was the daughter of Presbyterian Rev. Simmons Harrison Isler, Sr.. James Kyle and Barbara M.(Mae/Miller?) Isler were married on April 13, 1898. The Kyle's resided in Wilmington, NC(Kinston Free Press-1910) before moving to Goldsboro possibly to be closer to three of Barbara's sisters, Bessie, Annie, and Kate Isler of Goldsboro. Barbara apparently inherited (section of will on file) a sum of money and property from her uncle Stephen W. Isler (Died 1918) who owned a large law practice in Goldsboro-(taken from UNC alumni record). Since the original deed for the lot was placed in her name alone - even though she was married, one theory could be that the money to purchase the lot (and probably build the house) was her personal inheritance from this will, as well as her father's inheritance who passed away in 1910(UNC Alumni History/Kinston Free Press). In August of 1929 a deed of trust (on file) for $2500 at 6% for 10 years was obtained for an unknown reason.

In February of 1933, James and Barbara Kyle sold the house to Dr. W. M Ball and Mary T. Ball for the sum of $5,000(deed on file). In February of 1938, the Balls purchased the additional 20' of the current frontage, better known as lot no. 7 of Vinson-Mulberry Street Subdivision from J. A. Vinson and Lula Vinson. (map and deed on file).

I have not researched how the property was transferred from the Ball's to a joint ownership of Alberta D. (Dickinson?)Cobb of Craven County and Nina Lee Dickinson Hooks. However, one would assume that this was through an estate. The final transformation of the property, when the rear of the property was separated, to give the lot size that it is currently, was completed in February of 1946 when the two sisters? broke their joint ownership.
